I love it when I find an Australian site that tries something a little bit "out there". About a Girl has always had their own line called "About a Girl Collection", amongst other popular labels such as MinkPink, All About Eve, Sunnygirl, Stylestalker and the list continues. Usually their line has the more "expected" pieces such as maxi dresses, jersey tops, printed harem pants etc etc.

So I was surprised to find these real leather/cow fur accessories! I don't know how keen I would be to rock them out myself (the last two satchels have caught my eye a little), but I think the girls over at About a Girl have a good thing going.

Speaking of animal accessories on Aussie online stores, I also came across these babies at MarketHQ, another Aussie online store.

(Trench coat: Lovely Girl. Dress: Unknown. Necklace: Fashionology and Chains of Love. Boots: Lila Verne. Bag: Jim Thompson)

For this outfit, I had the pleasure of being shot by mahaila for the first time! Shooting together was a breeze and heaps of fun. What do you guys think of the results? :)

Robert bought these boots for my 21st birthday over a year ago. I chose them back when OTK boots were difficult to find (especially in lil ol' Perth) so they are even more special.  Not the most comfortable shoes in the world, but I wanted a timeless style so that I could wear them forever... so that meant no platforms :( and comfort was inevitably sacrificed.

Getting into the spirit. MERRY CHRISTMAS! I know this doesn't involve sewing....but I made a Lebkuchenhaus

This post may not be fashion or craft related... but I thought that I would share some cooking adventures with you.

This year I brought German cooking back to Aus by making 2 houses out of Lebkuchen! YUM! I love Lebkuchen. I suppose it is fairly similar to gingerbread, it just makes use of some different spices. e.g. cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, amongst others (depending on the recipe you use). Here you can find the link for the recipe that I used for the Lebkuchen. I used half the portions specified and I added more of the spices.

Create some templates for the front of the house, the side, the roof and a chimney (as you can see I totally forgot about the chimney)..oops! Make sure that each part of the house is the same length as it's corresponding wall.

Roll out the Lebkuchen so that it is 1cm thick. Lay out the templates then cut around them. You can also cut out some details such as a door and windows. Use a biscuit cutter to cut out the trees

Once the Lebkuchen has completely cooled, spread a layer of icing on the base plate and assemble the pieces  and secure them with more icing (use a piping bag for this). Place cups or tins or what ever you can find to keep the walls standing up right. If you want you can put something inside the house e.g. a lebkuchen man. Once the icing has dried, position the roof on.

You can now decorate the house. I decided to use a piping bag to create a scalloped tile look.

You can now add lollies and decorate to your hearts content!

Merry Christmas to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These are some images I've had saved in my inspiration folder. They come from one of my favourite street style blogs We The People. It features people on the streets in Sydney, Australia. Love it.

SPAIN: revisiting no. 3

Last stop in Spain, Cadiz. Aaahhhhh Cadiz... the home of feral cats. There were cats everywhere! I am not a lover of cats so this experience further embedded my fears for the creatures. Aside from the cats, Cadiz and the surrounding areas were nice to visit and the ocean was definitely swim worthy.

I made this vogue dress ready for the European summer. My favourite section of the garment is the back section, particularly the ruffles and the low back. Whenever I wear it, I feel extra summery!

SPAIN: revisiting no. 2

 Picos De Europa

Las Medulas

The second stop on the Spain revisit features the mountains in Picos De Europa and the unnaturally natural Las Medulas. We found extreme luck when the sun was just peaking over the mountain side and the clouds intermittently dispersed across the blue sky. It was pretty windy and quite cold... but it was all worth it. Las Medulas is an amazing place too. These red hills were actually formed by the Romans. They built a water system to mine the land for gold and consequently carved the land into hills and caves. This was like 2000 years ago. Pretty amazing stuff.

The garment shown here was made as a part of the fickle sense challenge number one, previously blogged here. The top is a CUT magazine pattern. I designed and made the shorts to match the top.

WELCOME HOME!

Photobucket
Two sisters back in the day.
Left: Mahaila. Right: Kaye.

Just a little blog update for our readers.....  :)

Mahaila is HOME for the holidays!!! So we are living together in Australia for the next month. Between Christmas, New Years Eve, boxing day, summer festivals, family, friends, the beach, op-shops, bars, pubs etc etc it is an understatement to say that we are excited about the upcoming few weeks.

With this being the first time that we are together since starting Fickle Sense, we are even more inspired to post more outfits, projects, challenges, outings and all things fashion related!

I also want to apologise to you guys for the lack of outfit posts on my behalf (mahaila has been the only one posting outfits since late last month). Believe me, I am inspired constantly, I have enough time and I have soooo many outfits I want to share with you. The reason for the lull is that I have not had a photographer! Robert and I recently broke up.... in the end, we decided that it was best for both of us. At the moment, I'm learning what it's like to be single - and how to appreciate solitude. So far, so good. I'm currently on the path to finding other avenues for taking photos so that I can continue sharing what I love... so please bare with me over the next few weeks while I find my feet :)

SPAIN: revisiting no. 1

 Bilbao: Guggenheim

This week I will be revisiting some previous outfits and memories from our Spain trip.

Our first stop was in Bilbao where we visited the impressive Guggenheim. Laredo was the next stop and one of our favourite locations on the trip. It was the first time that I had the opportunity to touch the European coast. I was VERY excited.

This dress was featured in my very first post on fickle sense. It was a simple dress to construct and I like that I can just throw it on. No effort required.

While browsing through the Asos website I was surprised to find so many weird and wonderful pieces of jewellery. The secret??? Go to the jewellery section, and instead of choosing "bracelets", "rings" or "necklaces", click "OTHER". Any jewellery that cannot be categorised under conventional headings is my kind of jewellery.

This is not just my current shoe rotation, but my entire heeled shoe collection (minus my Steve Madden Miu Miu-esque clogs which are currently stranded at my friend's house). I have only started collecting shoes over about the last 10 months.... ever since I got a real job and could afford more than just my $60 black patent pumps, which I used to force to go with every outfit. I am obsessed with each and every one of these babies and I love having the freedom to choose from a number of different shoes for my outfits. I have them all in display in my room so that I can appreciate them everyday.
