SEWING: Shoulder line Princess Seam navy dress

I have been busy drafting princess seam dresses lately. This navy dress is a shoulder line princess seam dress. I still struggle to fit clothing to myself. But I think that the fit is OK. I feel a bit 60's when I wear it, just because the dress is quite short.

We took these photos in the middle of the large round about at Strausberger platz. Olafur Ellison featured one of his mirror installations here.

More princess seam dresses to come!

Marni x H&M challenge

The Marni x H&M challenge complete!

Kassy's Outfit
(Blazer: Topshop. Shoes: Asos. Tank: Agent 99)

I was so excited to see these pants finally arrive on my doorstep after their looooooong flight from Berlin! I'm so lucky to have a sister on the other side of the world who understands what its like to have a fashion itch that needs to be scratched. When I visited mahaila in Berlin, I was so jealous to see she had easy access to some amazing stores...my favourites were the Acne store and All Saints store... not to mention the amazing boutiques we visited that were unlike anything in Australia. But it was even her accessibility to H&M that made me jealous. Sure, something from H&M may not be special to some people.... but the story behind these pants epitomizes what this blog is really about... sharing fashion inspirations from across the globe :)

Mahaila's Outfit

I wanted to send the Marni pants off to Kassy as quickly as possible so I challenged myself to make a top in an hour. I had this black lace type fabric which I purchased in Potsdam at the travelling Fabric market. I played around with the hem and shaped it to suit the style of the pants. It was quite the adventure walking with these pants on. The crotch sits at a strange position on me, so walking up stairs was quite difficult. I think that Michael found it quite amusing.

Thanks to Kassy for the challenge. Consider the challenge of the Marni pants compete!

Challenge No. 3: Long story of the Marni pants.

Perhaps very few readers would remember the 'challenges' that we completed a while back on Fickle Sense (Challenge 1, Challenge 2) . Yes we have been a little lazy lately but we are getting back on track! We are ready and raring to inject a little bit of energy and enthusiasm into our monthly challenges.

So what do the challenges involve?
It's no secret that Kaye and myself differ in our styles, talents and inspirations. The challenges give us the opportunity to think outside our own boxes and try different things. It also allows us to maintain an open dialogue between Berlin, Germany and Perth, Australia. So, on a monthly basis we will challenge each other to complete different fashion related tasks.

Getting back on the Challenge horse.
This challenge began with an email from Kaye.

'Hey I have a huuuuuuuuuge favour to ask. H&M has been doing a few collaboration designer labels. I always see the collection knowing that I can't have it. So I was wondering......would you be able to buy me a couple of the pieces and send them to me?.....if there are heaps of girls in there running around and snatching things, then don't worry about it, coz I wouldn't go into the store when it's like that.'

As many people know, I am THE worst shopper. I rarely buy clothes and the thought of running into a store, snatching and grabbing.... it just doesn't sit well with me. But, in the name of sisterly love I ventured to H&M to source the requested item. However unfortunately when I arrived 100 other people had the same idea which resulted in me standing in a stagnant line for half an hour.

At this stage it was obvious that I was not getting anywhere, so I left the store with a feeling of defeat. After work I got ready to email Kaye with the bad news. In a last minute attempt I thought 'well I might as well check the website'. There in their glistening state I saw the requested golden pants. BUT were they available in the right size? Clicking on the size button ........... YAY! they are available! A few days later they arrived on my door step. I felt pretty lucky. Though having only just checked the H&M website now, it would appear that they are on sale.... so perhaps we were not THAT lucky.

After informing Kaye that the pants were purchased, she challenged me to create an outfit around these Marni pants. Tomorrow we will post the results of the challenge.

Challenge number 3:
Create an outfit around the Marni pants.

Kaye has a new blog!

Photobucket

We're baaaaaaaaack! And with some big news!

Kaye has a new blog!

I've started another blog! Render Sublime is a side project where I will be independent... all on my own without my big sister! Scary!! I'll be posting my outfits, my DIY's and anything else fashion related.
Most of you know me as Kaye, which is actually my middle name. When we started Fickle Sense I wanted to saviour a sense of anonymity. Unfortunately using my middle name proves awkward when translated to the real world.....never in a million years did I think I would actually meet people through this blog! So now you'll be seeing my real name, Kassy, at the end of blog posts :)
I will still be contributing to Fickle Sense as usual. Mahaila and I will concentrate on doing more challenges for you all...... in fact there is one coming up in the next few days!!! Stay tuned :)

It's weird being the new kid on the block again... please be kind if you visit Render Sublime! ;)

Creative...Thursday: Jodi Made

It was a while back now that we ventured to Budapest for the weekend.
We meet up with a fellow creative, Jodi. Jodi was recently featured in the Burdastyle handbook with her green coat. She even traveled to America for the opening. Exciting stuff! How many people can say they have been published in a book? Thanks Jodi, for meeting with us in Budapest and sharing your thoughts and inspirations:)

Where are you from?
I grew up in a town called Kati Kati. It’s the mural town of New Zealand. It’s a beautiful place on the coast but very small. It was always my dream to live in a faraway country. I moved to Budapest six years ago. I love living here, it’s a beautiful, creative city with lots going on. I love Europe - it is so easy to travel around and there are so many different people and cultures in such a small area.

What is your art/craft and where can we find it?
My main hobby is sewing but I also like to do calligraphy, make cards (birthday, Christmas etc), knit. I’ve just opened an etsy shop http://www.etsy.com/shop/JodiMade It doesn’t have so much stuff in it yet but I’m working on it.

Jodi in America with the Burdastyle handbook
I post pics of things I make (usually clothes for myself) on my blog. http://www.jodimade.com

What are the positives in buying handmade items?
They are not mass produced, so there is much less chance of others having the same stuff as you. As a teenager my friends and I would shop at the same stores and end up with all the same clothes and would then have to coordinate who got to wear a certain top when. It was ridiculous. That was when I really started sewing a lot.

Where do you find inspiration?
I read a lot of sewing blogs. There are so many people out there making cool things. It’s funny to see trends in blogland which actually aren’t trends here on the street. Last year there were so many people posting scalloped things and so I just had to make myself a few scalloped dresses. I think I saw ONE person in Budapest with a scalloped skirt.....
I like people watching too, sitting at cafes and checking out what all the passers by are wearing.

What motivates you to create?
I just have a need to make things. I always have. Being creative was always very encouraged when I was a kid - at home, at school, and by things in my town.

My nana would give me her leftover craft supplies - wool, buttons, fabric, craft magazines. She is always making something or learning a new skill.

In Kati Kati there is an A&P (Agricultural and Pastoral) show every year. There are lots of competitions and basically everyone I knew used to enter in some category. I would make stuff like miniature gardens, cards. My nana would enter her delicious cakes and other baked goodies, my dad would put in the vegetables he grew. I loved it - kids could win 50 cents for first place, and get certificates! (50 cents was enough for a good sized bag of lollies at the corner shop). I think competition is a great motivator....

What encouraging words/advice would you give to someone who is interested in sparking their creativity?
Take some classes or find people who are making the kinds of things you would like to do. It can be much more fun to work in a group and bounce ideas off each other.
